Why does some laminate flooring have grooves between edges.

Laminate flooring is made to be durable and long lasting but it can have some problems. Beveled edges on laminate planks add a natural style reminiscent of hardwood floors to the flooring giving it a more authentic wood look. For them square edged boards are monotonous and make for a boring floor. Each edge is slightly rounded to give a v groove between each plank.

The edges of the boards blend together to create a single floor space. Many of those issues result from improper installation or unfavorable conditions for laminates. Pieces that do not get locked together properly will drift apart over time. The more beveled the edge or end is the more apparent the grooves will be between the boards.

Micro beveled floors maintain a visual distinction between each individual board transforming the flooring from a functional walking area to a distinct design element of the space. Most quality laminate flooring is made with grooves and other designs that allow the pieces to lock together. Watch for gaps between pieces. Flooring purists also.

The gaps will show as dark lines which are actually open expanses. A beveled edge end will have the most. Beveled beveled edges ends were the first style to emerge when prefinished wood became popular. This helps to prevent gaps.
